A New York based artist and educator, Penelope Umbrico has, in her work, examined typologies found in sales catalogs, search engines, photo sharing sites and online classified communities. She attended Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Canada, and received her MFA at the School of Visual Arts. Umbrico has exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, International Center of Photography, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. She also has received numerous grants and fellowships, including Anonymous Was A Woman, Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship, NYFA Artists Fellowship, NYFA Catalogue Project Grant, and the Harvestworks Scholar Fellowship. Umbrico is currently core faculty at the School of Visual Arts, both its BFA Photography program and MFA Photography and Related Media program and is the Chair of MFA Photography at Bard College, NY.

Mass Art's Fall 2009 Photography Lecture Series

Mass Art's Fall installment of their "Photography Lecture Series" has shaped up quite nicely. Any photo-lover in the Boston area should do themselves a favor and mark down all of the upcoming lectures on their calendars. They should, across the board, be thoroughly engaging. If you're not a Mass Art student, however, I would highly recommend showing up a little early, as space is limited.

Mass Art's Photography Lecture Series

The schedule for this semester's Photography Lecture Series at Mass Art is quite impressive. Bringing together a number of wonderful artists and critics such as Mitch Epstein, Judith Joy Ross, Paul Shambroom and Luc Sante, to name only a few, this series is both a rewarding and stimulating forum for the discussion of photography. So, if you're based in Boston, you should do your best to attend at least a few of these. The one caveat, however, is that space is extremely limited so if you know for sure that you want to attend, show up early!

Elinor Carucci At Mass Art

For anyone in the Boston area Monday, November 3rd, Elinor Carucci will be giving a lecture at 2 pm on the 4th floor of the Kennedy building at Mass Art. This event is free and open to the pubic, however, space is limited so show up a little early if you know you want to go. Carucci will (most likely) be discussing the impetus behind her projects Crisis and Pain. In the statement for this work, she avows:

"'Crisis' was taken during a very difficult time in my relationship with my husband, Eran.

It was photography that allowed me to be able to step away, to see what was going on, even what is about to happen. The fact that Eran let me take those pictures, in the middle of these difficult situations, in a way, reconnected me to him. And at times he used my pictures to tell me what he couldn't say.

During the same period of time I had also dealt with severe back pain, I made a series of self-portraits, describing my pain and the different treatments I went through, I titled this series 'pain'. Having this pain was also one of the catalysts for the marriage crisis to happen, so for me these two bodies of work are connected."

Gregory Crewdson At Mass Art

Gregory Crewdson is scheduled to lecture at Mass Art's Pozen Center Wednesday, October 29th at 6p.m. For anyone interested in attending, I would highly recommend showing up a little early to procure a spot, as I expect the turnout will be rather high.
