Dream Boats At Umbrage

The newly assembled Dream Boats collective, comprised of Adam Golfer, Joe Leavenworth, TJ Proechel and Daniel Shea, will be presenting their inaugural exhibition at the Umbrage Gallery in DUMBO this week. All of you photography-loving New Yorkers out there should show some support for these talented young artists and swing by the opening for the festivities. If you need more convincing (which you shouldn't) the Dream Boats are also offering an affordable print sale in conjunction with the show. Images range in price depending on size and edition number and will be available through the gallery. Check out the editions here. The statement below speaks to the group's collective mission:




"As a group, Dreamboats adds to the growing disambiguation between working personally and working editorially. Members of the collective, who met at Maryland Institute College of Art, are primarily engaged in contemporary fine art and social documentary practices, but their professed intention is to circumvent the traditional photographic establishment to create a self-sustaining network of distribution and support for the creation of new photographic works. The works selected for the exhibition are from each artist’s recent body of work: Adam Golfer’s series, Kin*, Joe Leavenworth’s Pictures from Home, TJ Proechel’s Dream House, and Daniel Shea’s Untitled (Baltimore)."

Nymphoto Presents at Sasha Wolf Gallery: Call For Entries

Jane Tam e-mailed the other day asking me to spread the word about the most recent Nymphoto call for entries. They are selecting submitted work for an exhibition at the Sasha Wolf Gallery. So, if you meet the one submission requirement (being a woman) you should take advantage of this opportunity by sending them some work! You can find the guidelines below.

"Nymphoto is looking for the best in female contemporary and emerging photography. Work will be curated by the core members of the collective, in conjunction with highly respected curator and gallery owner, Sasha Wolf. Works selected will be included in "Nymphoto Presents at Sasha Wolf Gallery" and be on view from May 23 to June 6, 2009. Sasha Wolf Gallery is located in lower Manhattan, conveniently located and easily accessible from both Chelsea and Dumbo, two of New York's artistic centers."

Any woman working in photography.

Call For Entries Deadlines

Entrants may enter their image selections online via www.nymphoto.com anytime
between March 27 through midnight (EST) on April 3, 2009.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions are accepted via an online form on www.nymphoto.com. A submission fee of $19 for up to 2 images, and $26 for up to 5 images, must be paid through PayPal upon submission of your work. Accepted artists will be notified via email by April 8, 2009. There will be an additional hanging fee of $25 for accepted artists. Framed works, ready for hanging, must be shipped/delivered to the gallery by May 15, 2009. Details will be provided to participating artists upon acceptance.

You will need the following information available to complete your submission.

* Your contact information
* Link to your website, if available
* Brief bio & artist statement (optional)
* 2 - 5 images ready for upload - JPEG format, 700 pixels wide, 72 dpi, no more than 500 KB each
* Caption information for each image - title, dimensions, medium, year

Plum Collective

Kelly Burgess e-mailed me yesterday announcing that she recently started a Boston based photography collective entitled Plum Collective. As the mission statement on the website declares:

"Plum is a collective of talented emerging photographers located in the Greater Boston Area. It functions as an organization for furthering the professional advancement of local artists and enriching the cultural landscape of Boston. Our hopes are that Plum will serve as a networking point for emerging photographers (of all ages) and also prove to be a resource for both local and national galleries.

Plum's goal is to not only bring artists together in collective form on the internet, but also with scheduled exhibitions and publications. There is a very small amount of photography being shown in the area, and we want to change that. With the recent news of many galleries in Boston closing their doors, Plum is looking to offer photographers a way to communicate with other artists in the area and exhibit their work."

They are currently looking for submissions for membership. So if you're a Boston-based photographer whose looking to get collaborative, you should pay them a visit!

From Here To There

Katie Shapiro e-mailed me today after happening upon The Exposure Project website. As it turns out, she is a member of the Los Angeles based art collective From Here To There. Their site is well worth checking out when you get a minute. It's nice to find other artists that are working in a similarly collaborative manner. As their mission statement asserts:

"From Here to There is a collective of artists currently living and working in Los Angeles. Their practices range from photography to collage and include video, sound, and installation. What brings them together is their desire to combine their personal perspectives and various interests to create a greater dialogue through the art that they make. They meet on a bi-weekly basis to discuss ideas both old and new, to hone their practices, and fuel each other through discussions, critiques, and conversations."
